I have been listening to The Archers since around 1985 and enjoy it immensely. Of course it's a drama but over the years, the characters have become almost real.

After 60 years, this radio soap opera is still going strong! The famous tune has never been changed, so it brings back childhood memories for many like myself.

For me, it's not so much the story lines (which are very much in tune with the real world) as the chance to switch off for 15 minutes during which one is happily abducted to a parallel universe which is very similar to ours. Everyday life in a fantasy village is brought to us in clear voices, often with wonderful regional accents, with sound effects like farm noises and church bells added to liven up the stories. And no matter how similar the stories and characters are to real life, The Archers will always remain quintessentially British. Considered shallow by many, this may not be the most mentally challenging podcast available, but it certainly is a great way to relax and enjoy yourself, especially with a cup op strong tea within arm's reach.
