A relaxed war film
I suspected that ‘In the fog' was a Russian film. But upon closer examination, I found out that it is joint Belarus, Russia, Latvia, Germany and Dutch film. Fortunately it is a largely Russian film. The advantage of a Russian film is that they take the time to tell a story which usually ends with no climax. There is little, or no, cuts at all in the scenes. And that makes even a war film very relaxed. ‘In the Fog’ is an adaptation of the novel by Vasil Bykov. It is a journey through autumnal forests. It is about good and evil. Forgiveness and revenge and impossible decisions that you sometimes have to make as a human being. A quote from the movie ‘People can change. Especially if they want to stay alive.’ A very special film.
