Bonus Patreon Upcycle - Rodney Marks: Murder at The Bottom of the World

Thanks to COVID, we all now know, better than ever the impact that social isolation can have on our mental health.
Depression, confused thinking, and emotional instability were symptoms many of us became all too familiar with; but imagine you had been in lockdown somewhere thousands of miles away from the nearest city, in perpetual darkness for 6-months of the year, and subjected to temperatures as low as -80 degrees celsius... Oh, and you're locked down with your co-workers...
That shit might just make you want to kill somebody... right?

I adore this podcast! I am a patron and also subscribe to wondery. Feels like me and my best mate chatting about the worst stuff in humanity but trying to comprehend it. Xx

‘Mean girls’ vibe with lacking investigations

Too much of their own opinion in this podcast. If you are investigating, surely you should be impartial? A real mean girls vibe with their own views shared far too frequently. Questioning innocent people’s statements to police and actions they took in the moment. Seriously no need in calling criminals ‘mental’. No interviews with anyone involved in cases. Documentaries used as the investigations?? I could do that… really disappointed with this series as it has so much potential. Mixed with the shocking audio of the presenters. Lastly, if I wanted opinions on politics, I would listen to a politics podcast not a true crime.

I’ve tried to listen to a few different episodes as this has won lots of awards, although for what I have no idea. These two love the sound of their own voices, and their own jokes, plus there is an unnecessary amount of swearing. On top of that they are totally disrespectful to victims and the researching of episodes is lazy. Won’t be listening again.

I’ve listened from the first episode but after the Sarah Payne episode I’m deleting. The research that used to be put into episodes is sorely lacking now, episodes are churned out in factory style production. Joining up with Wondery is just another nail in the coffin of a once great show. I get it the presenters are running a business but they were caning it on Patreon, they are obviously desperate to keep growing lucratively probably already negotiating a TV series but by expanding the way they have they’ve lost the edge they had above other shows and really diluted the quality of their product.

This is really interesting. One thing I would ask is, please don’t refer to criminals as “mental.” Things like that propagate societal stigma for those with mental health issues and draws a parallel between criminal activity and mental illness where in reality there is no such parallel.
Also, you could do with some legal advice when you’re dealing with legislation. In the Staircase episode you read the “more prejudicial than probative” rule but fundamentally misunderstood the exception at the end of the provision. Legal advice would help you keep things factual and balanced.

Listened to one episode and I’m already out. The research seemed very shallow and low-effort (complete with at least 3 factual errors that I noticed, having just read a book on the case) but while this was immediately off-putting, far worse was the hosts’ flippancy and irreverent tone when discussing truly tragic events. It’s so disrespectful and off-putting - if you didn’t know any better, you’d think they were simply recounting the plot of a film they just watched. Who dissolves into shrieking giggles when discussing a case that involves the violent death of children?
I usually just leave ratings rather than write reviews, but these hosts bothered me so much I felt I had to express it. For me, this podcast typifies the worst stereotypes of the true crime genre. There was no attempt at reflection or gaining new insights; just thoughtless sensationalism for people who want to exploit terrible events for profit.

Wow!
I listen to a lot of true crime pod cast. CreepTime, Phychopedia, Heart Starts Pounding etc.
what a breathe of fresh air you two wonderful women are ❤️
Peep Show references AND Wombles?! Come ON.
You are both articulate and full of facts. Funny and intelligent. Couldn’t ask for more.
I’m writing this after just 4 episodes I cained back2back today.
I’m so exited to catch up on every single episode you’ve done.
Thank you 🙏🏼

Just listened to (most of) the Sarah Payne episode and I’m done. The lack of self-awareness, the irony of saying what is wrong with people talking about Sarah when they themselves have just graphically (and unnecessarily) described the decomposed body of a young child is too much. These women have made a fortune and completely changed their lives based on the sensationalisation and exploitation of victims of crime. This isn’t a podcast that is trying to help victims this is about making money for the hosts; I think it’s time to stop listening and supporting this nonsense.

I have only just found this podcast and I absolutely love true crime and mystery stories, and being very late here is perfect because I’m never running out of something to listen to, but as a coach driver I don’t have time to read, this particular podcast has me chuckling to myself one moment and gasping in shock the next, I do wonder what my passengers must think sometimes. Huge well done guys deserves to o be top spot

Wondery plus and their own shameless plugging has ruined this!

I’ve been listening to this podcast for well over a year now and used to love the regular episodes and unusual cases that I’d never heard of in other podcasts! Unfortunately, recently I can’t help but notice that less and less episodes are available unless you’re a part of Wondery Plus! I also can’t help but roll my eyes at the constant requests to go and watch the ghost special on YouTube and the dreaded time it’s the British podcast awards! The hosts also seem to be getting particularly high and mighty and have strong opinions on everything, such a shame as I really did love this!

Uninformed all around!

Their research is rubbish, there’s way too much ‘in my opinion’, very few facts and their egos are… massive! … also, their recent and unnecessary hot take on another podcast network that’s recently had (substantiated) claims levelled against it of bullying, verbal abuse and a generally just a toxic work environment was uninformed and arrogant to say the least. Will I keep listening? I THINK NOT!

Ridicules victims, cackling and inappropriate laughter by the hosts, narrating goes off at tangents into their own mediocre life stories. Insular, vacuous hosts who ruin potentially good true crime stories. How has this ever won any awards? Don’t waste your time, I’m not!

I used to absolutely love this podcast and I have to say I really feel there is obviously hard work put into the episodes. It’s just not been the same quality since the subscriptions started and now most of the episodes are subscriber only apart from the odd one. Good luck in your ventures but there are other podcasts covering better cases for free.

Can’t stand the attitude or energy of either host. So stuck up and patronising, which is pretty tone deaf for 2023.
Completely misses the mark in terms of anything other than bolstering their already unjustifiably over-inflated egos. Really can’t understand why they sound so pleased with themselves - the show is badly researched, badly structured and the cases become a side note to their own personalities.
The cover art does a good job of setting the tone for the show - unrelated, irrelevant and full of ego. Avoid if you’re actually interested in learning anything about true crime cases.

I listen to a few episodes and then had to stop as I got sick to death of the overuse of unnecessary swearing to drive home a point.
Much of the banter is really cheesy as well and in no way related to the story being told.

One if my favourite podcasts. Funny without being disrespectful to the victims; well researched and articulate. Both hosts have lovely speaking voices and are a pleasure to listen to, mixing the right balance of levity into their narratives. They don’t use the podcast as a vehicle to blather on incessantly about their own marvellous selves and opinions like some of the other (extremely disappointing) true crime podcast hosts on the market who often make toecurlingly nasty jokes at the expense of the victims. Cases are interesting often relatively unknown crimes. Keep it up!

Used to really love the pod, but since it’s more popular, the quality has definitely gone down hill.
The constant side chats & off topic chat make it hard to follow the story properly.
Todays ep, 322, is probably the last I’ll be listening to.
Too many jokes & puns because the detectives surname is Apple, making it completely unlistenable.
Used to recommend to everyone, will be recommending you don’t listen in future.

Doesn’t reach the research quality of other true crime podcasts such as Crime Junkie. A lot of pointless banter which can be at times condescending and poorly informed: at times absolutely ignorant. The hosts can come a across in some episodes as patronising if things don’t fit in their worldview which is followed up with plenty of “My opinion”. Seems episodes which involves kids are better phrased and also researched. That said, they cover unusual cases across the globe which is not that common, hence the rating.

Used to be a fairly good podcast but nowI can't stand it. Their attitude is gross and classist, their research is shoddy, and the hosts now come across as superior and unpleasant. Also can't seem to stop making stupid remarks about things they are uninformed about (such as blaming the Hillsborough disaster on "football hooligans"- yes they made a follow up after being called out about it, but they keep doing the same thing over and over and even when they are called out they aren't apologetic and their army of stans keep supporting them). Don't bother with this, their stans won them a listeners choice award but it couldn't be more undeserved.

I’ve found a few true crime podcasts, but Suruthi and Hannah feel one of the most personable. It’s like listening to your friends discussing a case, there’s always explanations for words or phrases that may be new to us and they really delve into each case- you can see there’s been a lot of research done and continuing to do as occasionally there’s even updates on certain episodes. I’ve been a true crime fan for maybe 2-3 years now and this podcast is definitely scratching that itch for me. 100% recommend to any true crime fan.
