Not great anymore

This app used to be great but not anymore. The bug where you end up exporting the same file is horrendous. This has been happening for at least a month now and there seems to be no fix in sight. The only workaround is to work one photo at a time and then delete the file after each export and close and reopen the app. Come on Affinity!!

to say i'm disappointed with affinity photo for ipad pro would be an understatement...there are other photo apps that are much easier to use with more functionality...and you have to buy a separate app/license if you want to install it on your desktop, my case imac...what a rip! then there's all the add-ons you have to buy from £20-40 or more so the initial price easily turns into several hundred £s...example, in other apps you can use the dodge, burn, curves & contrast to do in minutes what takes much longer and much faffing with affinity 😖

Something strange is happening.

For use on an Ipad this is an amazing Product and well worth the purchase price. It practically does everything Photo Shop and Lightroom does including Stacking. Not only that ‘IT WORKS’ !!! OK it was a little daunting at first and looked complicated and I wondered if I had done the right thing in purchasing it, but thanks to the very easy to follow included video tutorials I’m now processing photos and stacking and other things. However, make sure your IPad OS has the latest update (15.3.1) if you want to process RAW Files as earlier versions will not support RAW. I fully recommend Serif’s AFFINITY Photo App to anyone who only has an IPAD or hates their Laptop or PC continuously crashing or needing to update every 5 flaming minutes. Ipad is at least stable and AFFINITY works like a dream on it. Put it this way, if a complete Technophobe ( the reason why I now have an Ipad not a laptop/PC) can use this Photo editing App , so can anyone. It’s probably the best most useful APP I have ever purchased for my IPad. It’s Wonderful product !!
(PS, this is a genuine review from a very happy customer and I have no affiliation to Serif in any way.)

Missing an essential feature for a photo editing software

iOS photos integration is bad

Affinity in its self is fine but due to its poor integration with iOS it is unusable. I can share a raw from photos to Lightroom not to affinity, guides to create shortcuts end up in cocoa errors. Cut and pasting across in clunky and does transfer raw. Save some of your life and get the Mac aversion as creating any workflows with this on iPad are super unproductive and painful

You’re not going to pick this up and start work quickly. And even when you’ve got the basics, the interface is really tricky. If you want this just because you’ve read that its the best then I’d give it a miss and try something easier. If you’re a pro and prepared to spend time learning how it works then give it a go. There are a load of training videos within the app and on YouTube, but it’s still like learning Chinese, you wont be doing anything good anytime soon. Shame, I think the interface could have been made way more intuitive.

I have used Affinity Photo on my IMac since it was released…so when I got the latest iPad Pro with Apples M1 processor I thought this would be the best solution to edit my Nikon D500 Raw files…I import to Photos at full resolution approx 25mb files but when I open using the import from photos option they come in at 160px by 120px…nowhere can I find the solution…jpgs are fine but I don’t want to edit jpgs due to the gradual loss of data. Thought it may be the NEF codec but can’t see how you can check that…

Let’s face it, Photoshop on the iPad is a huge disappointment and severely lacking in functionality as compared with the desktop version.
As a Black Friday treat I purchased the Affinty Photo app and must say that I’m so impressed with the functionality available. As several previous reviews have alluded to there is definitely a steep learning curve but there are plenty of user guides and video tutorials to help out.
Stick with it is my advice, read the guides, watch the tutorials, practice a lot and you will very soon come to appreciate the capabilities of this app.
I very rarely use Photoshop any more !!

I decided to risk the £8.99 (50% off apparently) on this when my free trial of Adobe Photoshop ran out. I was worried I would struggle to find the right kind of tools for my occasional needs in a cheaper app for my iPad. I was totally wrong. Whilst there was still a learning curve to grasp the relationship between the different tools and menus, I actually found it quicker to pick up and understand conceptually. The results are just as good, if not better than what I was able to achieve before and the help and support is light years ahead of the competition too. It is phenomenal value for money.
For reference I have fairly standard photo editing needs: removing unwanted artifacts from photos and convincingly filling in with background etc. I’m using a 7th Gen 128GB iPad and a refurbed Apple Pencil.

This is a quality photo editor that actually makes good use of iPad and Apple Pencil features. Like other ‘real’ photo editors it is packed with features but has a UI that takes time to understand. I found it necessary to watch the tutorials then some third-party YouTube videos and read a lot of the help topics before I started to get how it works. It was worth persevering through the initial frustration to find the power of the app.
I have just used it to enhance and print a 20 year old JPEG of Uluru in the rain taken on a 4 megapixel pocket camera. The image had defeated all my previous print attempts because so much of the colour was out of gamut: RESULT!

I think as far as photo editing goes you won't find anything like this on the ipad.
I've used so many photo editing apps on the ipad and most of them are the same (add generic filters blah blah.)
This however takes a very deep dive into photo editing and allows you to control every detail!
If you want a high quality in depth photo ending app then choose this.
If you want a quick and easy to learn app to use, that also has great functions and editing options use snapseed.
For people unfamiliar with the other top brand editors on desktop like photopshop etc, this will have a steep learning curve so get ready to learn!
There are two minor issues I've seen with this however.
Imo, there should be a function where you can hover your Apple pen over an icon and it gives you additional options/information. So rather than committing on say "the pen tool" by tapping the icon, hovering your pen over will tell you its the "pen tool"
at the moment when you click on the wrong tool, you then have to click on other icons to find the one you want ( which if you don't know what all the tool icons are this could be time consuming)
Being able to hover over icons to see what tool it is and also possibly it's sub menu pop up would save a lot of time.
Also, a really really simple one that I'm surprised isn't here is your tool radius shrinking when you zoom in???
So if your tool is max size for instance and covers the whole picture, when you zoom in your tool radius is still covering the whole picture???? Why not have it shrink in perspective of how much you zoom?

I use Affinity Photo to make composite artwork and I have found all the various tools within it great. There is a lot to learn, particularly as I had never really used a photo editing app before I started, but I have picked it up bit by bit through tutorials and courses. Learning the app in this way stops it being overwhelming at the start and ensures you remember everything! Love Affinity Photo and really love that they don’t gouge you every month!

Versie 1.6.4
VERY disappointed that this app comes without a function to be able to ‘transform distort’ an image? What are the developers thinking? Beware if you want to move from photoshop where this command is a standard function and for any professional image editor and an absolute must. This makes this app virtually unusable due to this failure. A simple command where you can tap a ‘gripper’ around an image and simply move it around ‘distorting the image’ is an absolute must. PLEASE can you update this app ASAP with this function. Absolutely baffled by this.? I would suggest when companies such as this are selling these products, they should have a simple list of ‘missing functions’ so designers such as myself can quickly decide on whether to purchase or not.

One of the best apps for the iPad Pro! I also have the desktop version and very rarely use Photoshop anymore as a result. Not easy to use, I got a 8 hour training from a well-known training site for £10. Did about 4 hours and I’m just OK at it now. But it’s very powerful, hence its difficulty and numerous options. Nothing it can’t do and it’s very quick once you know how to use it.
No way is this a 3.7 out of 5 given it’s a one time price and is so powerful. Unless it won’t start.
If you don’t want something complicated and very powerful get one of the easy toy-Like editing tools.
There is nothing else like this for the price and on the tablet, 4.9 . -.1 for the difficulty.

Whilst you can do a lot with affinity photo I am constantly finding things I took for granted in photoshop that I am unable to do in affinity photo which is frustrating to say the least. I know AP isn’t PS and by the design of the app it would appear that Serif are trying to avoid the comparison by finding new ways of doing things. The persona tabs for instance are very different. However, these differences shouldn’t take away, or simply not include functions just because they don’t want to be like PS. I may be jumping the gun here as certain features may be added at a later date but from the forums I’ve seen many people have asked for common features since AP’s release and are still waiting.
A quick example is I find the channel and masking feature for selections over complicated and at the same time limiting. If you want to burn your alpha channel using a brush set to overlay for example...sorry you will have to use PS. I could write a long list of similar features I have spent time searching only to find they are not included.
My current frustration is with 360s. At the moment I am working on 360degree images from photos/screen shots but I would like to actually draw/paint one from scratch. However to do this I would need to add a grid underlay layer to act as a guide. The artwork would need to be on a separate layer above. Currently AP in unable to have more than one layer that will move in a 360 projection (equirectangular projection). You would need to merge the two layers for them both to move together which is destructive and obviously not what I want. Multi-layer 360 images can be created in PS though...just saying.
On a positive note AP seems to run smoothly on my Dell XPS and my iPad Pro (though the 360 images crash on iPad Pro - not sure if that’s to do with files/canvas size though). The fan hardly kicks in when doing basic tasks which wasn’t true of PS on the same machine.

When you import an image from iPads photos app you get a very low res image to work with. This is apparently a “known issue” on forums but why when so many other apps can do it seamlessly. You have to use a trick to drag the image into the app. As the interface is already very different and takes effort to learn this added issue just puts you off. Wasted my money.

I purchased this as a raw image processor as I didn't have the money to buy the full desktop version of my favourite software but I've now bought the desktop version of Affinity too now at a fraction of the cost. I find I use it for much more than originally intended.
Some will find the workflow clunky but with iOS now letting you plugin sd cards and drives to import via photos or files, I find it perfectly good, even for batch processing.

This is clearly a professional piece of software. It provides all the power you’d expect from photoshop, but on the iPad and doesn’t cost a fortune. Congratulations to the developers! Useless app

This thing is about as intuitive as putting a 4 year old in the space shuttle but all the buttons are in Chinese.
I’ve just spent 2 hours trying to do something that would have taken me 10-15 minuets on photoshop and in the end it got stuck with a selection i could not finish and made the whole project unusable. Nothing i tried would let the selection go and i pressed every icon and tried every tab on the app. On the subject of tabs.....
Don’t know why everything has to be on a separate part of the app.
One part for painting, one part for selecting, one part for adjustments and one for altering the image? Why?
Then when you figure that out you can’t un-select something so you’re stuck then not being able to do anything as the paint section doesn’t work because you have something selected from the other section.
Masking doesn’t do anything either.
I love the fact that you’ve tried to make this as powerful as photoshop and on that front you’ve beat them hands down but if none of it works then what’s the point?
Nobody wants to spend another few months learning a whole new programs stupid quirks and faults. You should have stuck to the photoshop way of doing things and you would have had a winner.
As it is it’s just a frustrating waste of time.
Absolutely not worth the money.

I've had this app since it was first released on the iPad, and in that time I've hoped that things might have improved. Through all the crashes, the promises and the changes, I've seen little improvement.
And here's where my unhappiness stems from. I've tried to like it, honestly I have, but I just can't get on with it. Now to put things in perspective, I've been a Serif user for many years, buying many of their apps on both the PC and the MAC, but this app just defies logic. I am acutely aware that many people find this app great and that's good for them, it just doesn't work for me.
My main gripes with this app are that it seems to be designed with desktop users as the main target audience. On a 9.7" iPad Pro, by no means a slow machine, or my iPad Pro 11", the app is cumbersome, crash prone and invariably slow. To add to my woes, the interface at times seems fiddly and overly complicated. The UI choice of colours leaves a lot to be desired as well, dim grey on a black background, along with purple for the active persona, but more on that later. If you don't believe me, try quickly confirming if the selection persona is active.
For instance, when you first install the software, upon opening it, you are presented with an almost black screen. This still defeats me after months use, where I open it and sit there waiting for some visual clue as to what needs to be done. I mean WTH??? who thinks that is great idea.
Lets ram the point home. At the top left is the Affinity logo, and at the top right are three tiny icons that really don't say much to the user on a screen that is small than 13". Then when you press the '+' icon, more out of frustration, you're overwhelmed with more very large icons, helping you get access to files form at least 12 different sources. Why not a menu on the first screen, instead of an overwhelming and often unnecessary selection of large icons. The problems don't stop there, document measurements appear to always default to inches. Each new document needs to be reset back to you preference, instead of remembering the last one you set.
For me at least, setting up a document is just plain annoying. It would have been better if they had provided a fast or simplified option, and a another button that allows the user to select more advanced settings.
Keeping on with the theme of inappropriate size ratios in an interface, the app is littered with tiny fonts and icons, that on anything smaller than a 20 inch screen, prove difficult to read. This connected with the obvious UI designer lover affair for dark grey on black adds to the overall feeling of annoyance. Inverted UI colours anyone?
Further, I understand the desire to split the interface up into persona's, similar in many ways to Lightroom. However, your version is plain confusing. It is often not clear why a greyed out icon is not available, and hints sometimes don't show up. When the hints do work, they might tell the user to go to another persona. This highlights the general problem with with selections in one persona, limiting the painting option in another, but as a user being given no obvious way to determine what is stopping you painting.
I don't get the need to close a document. When I am out of that document, surely it is closed off, but options exist to allow me to close it, but for what purpose. Is closing any different from suspended? After using the app for a while, I get the impression that closing might actually be deleting as files vanish when closed. Again confusion reigns because the interface is a mess.
I know the designers are passionate about their product, but telling the users who can't find solutions anywhere easily, to visit the forums and post a question is little help at 3 in the morning. Watch the videos, why??? this is a tablet at the end of 2020, not DOS PC in 1984.
Underneath all the veneer, lies an engine that is amazing. The results that many artists and photographers have produced with the software is not in question, just the execution of the app's design that doesn't work with me or quite a few others by the sounds of things. In the interim, I have switched to ArtStudio Pro as a better solution to editing.
Finally, at over a GigaByte in size, even on an iPad with 1TB storage, this is a large app that is using space better used for other things. I'll keep an eye out on future updates, but I ain't holding my breath anytime soon.

You could spend many an hour just trying to get to grips with layer masks and how to get some sort of flow or method to use them easily.
Poorly designed interface, no logic to some of the tools and drop down menus and you focus more on dealing with the software than the work you are trying to create.
The time you would waste on this software out weighs any savings you might make compared to other more professional editors.

I tried so hard and long to love this app, but i just can’t finish a single composite without AP crashing tens of times until i give up out of frustration. Owned this app for years and with every update i hoped it was fixed, but it never is. I owned multiple iPads and used multiple versions of this app. Unfortunately it was always the same story. Crashes after crashes after crashes. It is completely unusable.

I’m loving the app and all, however I’m still trying to understand why the app won’t open PSD files from the Files App. And in the develop options, I would appreciate having the curves panels, this will be an execellent addition to. The iPad that I’m working on is the 2019 iPad Air.
Many Thanks.

For an iPad app this is certainly up there with the best and is close to professional grade editing. I say close because the workflow is atrocious as with many iPads apps. My main issue is the gallery page where you start your work, I really don’t want hundreds of my images just sat there waiting to me to delete them one by one once I have finished my editing, it is unnecessary to have this at all. Just let us have a save button in the actual editing window, and perhaps a simple open command. All this export stuff just to save an image is not conducive to a professional workflow when speed is often a factor, it’s just too clonky. Editing itself is ok and probably the best we can expect until Adobe sort their act out. In reality it’s a great app but lacks the speed and ease of colour correction and enhancements that you can carry out in Lightroom in just a few seconds - that’s another reason why I can’t say this app is my go to app when needing to do colour correction etc. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a powerful app but feel it’s let down by its interface and it’s workflow otherwise it would be the first app I fire up for when wanting to spruce up lacklustre images.

I really enjoy photography but have always struggled to get into the editing side of things. I gravitate towards the more basic apps that allow me to quickly make the adjustments that I require.
So I am not coming to this app with much experience of layers etc. But I find it very frustrating and not at all intuitive to use even to make simple adjustments. I know there are the tuition videos but it is cumbersome to keep looking these up to find what you need and they do not always go into much detail.
I appreciate this frustration is in large part due to my own lack of knowledge in dealing with layers etc and I will endeavour to stick with it and become more proficient with it but for the time being I keep going back to the apps I am more familiar with.
If you are not familiar with layers, masks, selections tools etc then this is probably not the app for you.

Great App, direct Photoshop replacement, been thinking about image editing on my iPad and did quite a lot of research into it, then finally choosing this. I didn’t even know it was on sale. I used it for a bit to do some testing, fired up a photo so I could mess with the selection tools and I was hooked. Also when I noticed the sale, after visiting the website, I got photo and designer for MacOS in the sale too, then I was so impressed i got designer for iPad too, very powerful software with no subscription.

I’m a desktop photoshop user, recently bought IPad Pro to be able to modify and publish my photos while on holidays. After installed photoshop on iPad the surprise! I was not able to use it and basic functionalities never found, (even googling it). Then I found this product, installed life time with the price photoshop cost every single month and with just 30 minutes tutorial I’m able to do more things on iPad with Affinity Photo than with desktop with photoshop! Still can’t believe how powerful and easy to use can be this software! Couldn’t ask more!

I am sure many will find this photo editor amazing but I found it difficult to get the results I was looking for. I’ve been a long time user of a couple of other well known editors and perhaps that’s why I find it less intuitive to use and difficult to navigate. Of course there is an aspect of this that is down to my own laziness at getting to grips with the interphase and controls but it seems like hard work.

Affinity is a great tool, both on desktop and iPad. That said I really hope they remove the clunky file management system in the iOS app and just use Apple’s native system like iWork and Pixelmator both use. Having the intermediate location of storing documents internally to the app means you never really know if the latest version of a file is in iCloud, or still on your iPad.

Too many UI issues.
ATM the one which is plaguing me most is the back button/return to projects. It takes about 5 or more presses for it to register, I’m not sure whether its too high and actually within the dead zone of the iPad Pro screen? Either way on excel I’m able to access just a few millimetres below that mark with no screen lag or intermittent issues—which suggests to me its the app and not my iPad. Besides i dont recall this doing this prior to the last update.
It’s frustrating as hell.
The other Irritating UI issue is regarding the iPhone X/iPad Pro 2018 onwards navigation bar.
Please do not lock this bar! It’s ridiculous apple even gives you access to lock this bar, however please do not do this, its so so frustrating having to keep swiping up multiple times to “unlock” the navigation bar and return home.
Apps cannot mess with core functionality of the operating system! Apple gives you this ability to do that, that is on them, and it’s fricking dumb, you however dont need to do it! It ruins the swiftness of app switching for absolutely no gain. If you wont stop this at least consider offering an easy to find toggle! So those who want to be frustrated can continue to enjoy that privilege.

Does everything I ask it to do.

As a one off payment I have downloaded this package onto my iPad. I am a photographer hobbyist and only a casual user. I can not afford nor want any yearly subscription models offered by other companies.
This package has a ways and means of accomplishing all of my needs, whether it be sharpening, enhancing or being creative. I did feel that it would fall down on photo restoration but on my iPad it copes admirably with those requirement and deals with aged, damage and scratched pictures with ease.
I feel that it is perhaps only 60% there yet but with its free updates and its programmers slowly enhancing the package I am sure in time it will become a serious competitor with other photo programs.
It is really an admirable piece of software.

Today I have updated my iOS to the latest version and re-installed the Affinity app just in case that made a difference but no, it still crashes when I try to create a new layer from a selection. The developers do know about this issue as there are many people complaining online however the issue still hasn’t been fixed. Yet another mobile application trying perform on par with desktop apps. Photo development is ok but I purchased this app with the intention of taking advantage of the HDR merge and Panoramic stitching offered unlike the other leading developers. HDR merging personally made absolutely no difference at all with multiple different compositions. Panoramic stitching simply does not work at all and has not proceeded any further than the image loading screen. If any one reading this is considering purchasing an iPad Pro to replace their current laptop for photo processing and development, don’t bother. It has proved for me to be an incredible waste of money and time. Stick to a laptop/desktop with real desktop apps. iPad Pro’s will never be as good.

I purchased this recently after waiting to see what photoshop on iPad was going to be like. I have been a loyal adobe user for many years and have spent hundreds if not thousands buying their suites and updating regularly. Having become disillusioned with Adobe for many reasons, I decided to look for an alternative. I was put off this app by the reviews on here and the fact their is no trial for iPad. At this price I thought it was worth trying though and I am delighted I did. I can’t believe how cheap this is for such an awesome app. Of course it’s early days for me, but so far I haven’t experienced any of the crashes that so many people seem to be having. I am sure I have only scratched the surface in terms of using the tools and I will update my review in time, but so far so good. I think I might be getting this for my iMac next and can’t see myself giving anymore money to Adobe who don’t seem to give a crap about their loyal customers.

Had to write a review, the app is at a 3.7 score at time of writing, which is way too low. It’s a fully featured editor, it takes some time to learn, unless you already know your way around the desktop app. This is not MS Paint... Affinity Photo can easily match all the major features of that Adobe app (the one they just released for iPad half-finished and requiring a costly subscription!). Pay for this ONCE. Everything is there. The Refine Selection tool has helped me save an entire batch of someone’s wedding photos that were so badly composed (by a supposed pro) that the bride was in tears. The cloning and inpainting tools work well, the develop persona is great for preparing output, and the typography tools are top notch. This app supported font importing way before iOS 13 added it, and you have access to all the extra character variants in a complex font. Add stacking and the ability to edit 360° photos too. It’s a joy to use, with a little effort to learn each tool.

This app used to be my favourite for editing portraits as I loved the frequency separation feature however since updated this it was become completely unusable!
I can no longer add live filters to the high and low frequency tabs in the filters bar as live filters no longer exist? I tried to add Gaussian blur than invert it through the low frequency layer to add to the skin as always and it didn’t work, I then tried to add the unsharpen mask to the high frequency layer to add detail to the eyes but alas it wouldn’t invert again or add to the high frequency layer!
This app is too expensive to have all these bugs and as a student I rely on this for my editing for my course!
Please sort this ASAP!

I really love this app but the storage it takes up is crazy, gb and gb of valuable space used up on an already limited iPad. Even after closing projects patiently one by one it doesn’t free up the used space. If I could have access to wherever AP saves this data maybe I could delete it.
I have scoured the web looking for help and found that this has been a problem for some time. The only way I could free up the space was to delete the app and reinstall, wow, that can’t be correct can it ?
If anyone knows any better please let me know.
As I said I love the photo editing and look forward to updat s in the future so I can update my rating.

I’ve never completed a single edit with this app since I bought it in mid-late 2017 right after buying a brand new iPad Pro 10.5. What you see in the tutorials is nonsense because this app will crash repeatedly or simply freeze, preventing you from seeing live edits or adjustments with filters or brushes, for example. Furthermore, it will drain you battery and cause your iPad Pro 10.5 to run hot, very hot. The editors notes are laughable and the tutorial videos themselves show the same model of iPad running smoothly, but don’t be fooled: It’s NEVER run smoothly for on my device, across iOS versions, app updates and even after a clean restore to factory defaults. A costly, disappointing app that can’t be relied on for the simplest of tasks, prompting me to finally write a review after waiting nearly 2 years for a fix in utter desperation.

I desperately want to like this app as it does things that I usually have to use a desktop or laptop for but I find it so unintuitive to use. I’ve had it on my iPad for 2 years now and I’ve tried several times to understand and use it without much success. Today, for instance, I’ve just spent 20 minutes finding out how to export a project to a png file, and I have yet to find an undo button.
The interface is so cluttered and there are so many “modes” you can be in, I have to press the help button every other operation to find anything. Not conducive to an efficient workflow! I know what I want to do but I just can’t find anything. Since I probably won’t use 90% of the more detailed functionality it really needs a simplified or customisable UI.
The video tutorials are good, but assume you know where to find the function they demonstrate. It’s not easy when you have to switch back and forth between a video and the app!
I’ll probably continue to use it occasionally and struggle along but it is just sooooooo frustrating!

Purchased with a new iPad Pro, this was according to Apple, the ultimate photo software...
The big problem is that Affinity are trying to reinvent the wheel. I have been using Photoshop since version 1, Live picture, Lightroom, Capture One and more - this software is clearly powerful and the tutorials are comprehensive, but why the need to go against established protocols? Like many, my own rule has always been that software should be intuitive and it should not be necessary to watch a tutorial or get out manual to achieve basic tasks. Affinity Photo requires both to achieve the most simple task.
Sadly this is by far the most unintuitive software I have ever tried.

I really like this program and in theory it should be a wonderful replacement for Photoshop, especially on the iPad Pro that I use it on. However despite the tutorials showing how easy and effective it all is, in practice it’s not like that. Even simple things like making a selection and placing it in another document are a real hassle, (and it is not possible to “place” say, an insert from processed files unless they have been saved). The “refine selection” function looks amazing in the tutorial, but, in practice is disappointing. So, potentially good, but hard work.

Fantastic photo editing app, yes it takes patience and some time on the tutorials to get going but that’s to be expected on a PROPER photo editing app, this isn’t a “quick fix that will do” app this is a in-depth photo ending app great for combining images as well as editing and so very much more I didn’t even realise till going through the tutorials. I used this to edit my own wedding photos and it was fantastic so much better than using the laptop and a competitors pc based program (okay am old one as new ones for the laptop are far too expensive) results were fantastic and required no additional work when going to the professional wedding album company. Definitely well worth it’s price - just don’t expect to work miracles immediately if you haven’t used this before or are not familiar with proper photo editing as it takes a bit of patience and learning, as you would expect for something as comprehensive and in-depth as this is. And it’s ability to save to Dropbox is fantastic though I do with they had retained the ability to save the affinity photo file to Dropbox instead of directly to the iPad, I loved to be able to save that off the iPad and then bring it back if and when I needed it.
Definitely a great app, I’m still learning, and having a iPad Pro with Apple Pencil make this app even better and more accurate editing etc.

I have an IPad Pro 10.5 and bought this programme and an Apple Pencil in order to process my photos on the go when on a trip rather than hundreds when I get back. I sometimes took a MacBook Air but An IPad is so much more convenient and versatile when travelling. This programme is superb with great functionality, good tutorials and very good results. Certainly more functionality than Lightroom 5 that I use on my desktop. The big downside is exporting the finished images, rather than drag and drop to another programme or some form of bulk export each image has to be exported one by one (I have just moved 60+). I don’t use Apple’s Photo programme so to get full fat images I upload to ICloud and then download, copy and paste into a folder. This is so time consuming and a real blight to my workflow, maybe I haven’t figured out a better solution but hopefully this apparently simple task can be made easier as well as enabling me to escape the Apple ecosystem. Or am I just missing something simple??

Too much time needed to learn - interface is not logical and doesn’t follow the normal conventions of the apps we are all used to using photoshop/lightroom. Added new history which is great but can’t move back to a point in history and the undo arrows have gone! No online simple quick FAQs just video tutorials - which are so slow. Need to offer FAQ for users that are experienced editors and can quickly learn the program. No contact details for support. There are £9.99 apps available with tutorials on how to use Affinity - it should be far more intuitive and not need a £9.99 purchase of tutorials on top of the app price. This speaks volumes.

The lack of Google Photos support means that Affinity Photo doesn't work for me. I've persevered for months hoping the feature - supported by Adobe apps - would be added but, alas, there's no sign of much development. Having to copy photos manually to one of the few services used by Affinity Photo is more than just a nuisance. It's places the app in a productivity dead zone unless, unlike me, your photos are stored in the Apple ecosystem or on one of the services supported by the Apple Files app.

I’m not a ‘hater’, quite the opposite, I love Affinity Photo and Designer on my Mac, it’s an outstanding product.. but on the iPad 2017, it’s a disaster.. crash after crash after crash.. Have tried rebooting the iPad, deleting and reinstalling the app, nothing seems to works.. you can go 20 - 30 mins working on an image, doing the simplest thing, like using the selection tool, then bang, the app crashes and no way to recover your work.
Maybe they were being to hopeful, by saying the app would work on other ‘non pro’ iPads.. or maybe it just wasn’t Beta tested enough.. as it stands, it’s more of a wishful plaything, then an actual productive tool..

After owning from CS4 to 5 to 6, I have now shifted all work from Photoshop and Illustrator across to Affinity Photo and Designer. It is every bit as good as those products, and in my opinion better. Tutorials are brilliant, which made the move even easier, and Affinity doesn’t think that the world owes them bucket loads of money, in fact I think they are massively undercharging for there software. I have Photo and Designer on my Mac and iPad Pro, and work seamlessly between the two, achieving tasks already as fast as I achieved them using Adobe products after less than a month. I have to say affinity has become my number one photo editing app. After using the Mac version for some time’ Soon as the iPad app was released I purchased it right away. It’s a decent learning curve to learn any new app. But affinity makes that so much easier with their built in tutorials that you can reference at any time should you get unstuck’ or like me forget what you were learnt in the tutorial section 5 mins prior.
Although after the most recent of updates when I try to export directly to my photos the App just crashes & returns me to my main screen. Even after a reboot & a hard reset the app still behaves the same & crashes. Any chance this is an easy fix ? If so can you fix it please

This is an awesome alternative to photoshop and has so many parallels with the industry leading software it’s impressive. But I’m repeatedly disappointed and frustrated when I return to the app after quickly exiting to check or find something to find all the work I have just done hasn’t been saved and is lost. Auto-save on an iOS app shouldn’t even have to be a feature request and seems an obvious element in such an advanced piece of software.
However, I am enjoying using it, a bit unintuitive in places and there’s some weird terminology (like close means delete a project) which demands accidental discovery. But on a whole if you want photoshop on your iPad, this is the app for you!

This app is a great professional photo editing app, it contains a lot of features and is just like photoshop but has its own flare to it. The ability to use it on my iPad is great because I can edit my photos on the go and use it at school, also I can transfer my documents and use my PSD files from school on this. I love how the features are serious and no snapchat style features. I can easily select and manipulate different layers and combined with a stylus, (or finger) I can paint digital art. Also the fact I only have to pay £20 once is fantastic. This is a great app for students who are on a budget and don’t want to pay monthly for photoshop, and is great for professional photographers who know how to use every complicated feature. It is great for graphic design however if you are into that field of work I would keep up to date with the news of Affinity Designer (photos sister app) for when that becomes available on iPad. Overall this is a great app and would recommend it to anybody who wants to work with photos. Thanks Serif!

This software is complicated - and perhaps trying to be too clever. If you’re looking for ‘fun’ ‘easy’ photo editing, this is not it. If you’re experienced, and prepared to put in the time learning how this app does things slightly differently, then it’s for you.
The huge challenges involved in creating pro software for the touch screen have been addressed well, though there is refinement still needed imho as it’s not as intuitive as some other standard setting software on iOS.
Don’t even ‘go there’ trying to put text over images in this app. Otherwise seems to be performing quite well. Better than anything else available for the iPad Pro imho.
I have hankered after pro level apps for the iPad for what feels like a an age now, as well as an alternative to the "industry standard". It feels like we’re on the threshold where this is about to happen and my wish will be granted. This may well be the first piece of the jigsaw. While much work is still needed on this app, if they continue to pursue improvement with the energy they have so far, then it will get there. I just hope they don’t run out of steam before then.
Note: I’ve written this before attempting anything substantial. Therefore I cannot comment on stability of this app.

Horrible UI, brilliant features.

Loads of great things hidden behind a terrible design. I’ve been using design software products for 20 years and I spent a good 15 minutes just to figure out how to copy something to a new layer. I really wanted to like it because under the hood it is amazing. So I watched all available tutorials but still have to force myself to use it instead of Lightroom or any other tool. They realy realy need to redesign the interface because right now it is incredible unintuitive and hard to use.

Professional photo editing comes to IOS

This app is simply the best and most professional photo editing app for IOS. There are no silly gimmicky filters, stickers etc.. worth every penny. You can also be assured that the developer will continue to develop, improve and enhance this app. Just buy it. Love it.
Looking at some reviews it is quite apparent that this app is too complicated for some users which I fully understand. This is a real photo editing app, not one of the pseudo photo editors that has gimmicky presets, stickers etc.. so my only only advice to new users is just to play with it, try out different settings etc..

Don’t like this at all

May be it’s just me. There is plenty of functionality to this app once you have figured it out. When you have done some edits then what. Saving it back TP “photos” does not seem to be available. Sending it to drop box does not work, it suggests saving it in a random selection apps such keynote or pages which is weird in theory and does not actually happen in practice.
Selecting a photo to edit is made more difficult as my album order is randomised by this app.
Finally my regrettable conclusion is that this is the most expensive iPad app I have bought and the one I am least happy with. If it were a physical object I would have returned it.

Excellent.

I recently bought an iPad Pro and find this ap almost perfect for photo editing. My one reservation is that there does not seem to be a way of loading raw images from the camera or memory card, a computer has to be involved. I use Dropbox, though I really wanted to be able to edit “on the go”. I have heard that Serif are working on this, and if you could load raw files directly I would change my rating to 5 stars. Apart from that everything works as well as Photoshop Elements and Lightroom - which I used to use - much less expensive, and no subscription.

Very Ambitious App - but stability question marks

Edited my review from 1 star to 3 and then edited to 5.... My 1 star was down to a very unlucky first day with this app, which went very badly, due to serious stability issues.
After getting VERY cross with Photo , I calmed down and tried again. It was worth it as there is simply nothing else I have found that gives me the features I am looking for in a photo app on the iPad (e.g. Adobe Lightroom for IOS did not have HDR merge and Panoramic merge). Somewhere in the process of deleting the app, upgrading IOS, rebooting the iPad and reinstalling the app, things got a lot better.
I am still not as perficient in Photo as I am in Lightroom, and yet I am very impressed by Photo’s capabilities. My Canon 5d MkIV Raw files import well from Dropbox and can be made to look stunning. The photo processing functionality is much more ambitious than Adobe iPad LR. The only things I miss are subtle tweaks to shadow/highlight (which i know are being addressed by developers in beta version) and LR’s asset management.
This is Its a great app. Just a shame I had such a bad experience when I first installed it. However, I would recommend sticking with it.

I have been using this for about 10 days now and I have to say that this is a first class photo editing app! Compare this to Photoshop Mix, Fix and Lightroom and it beats them hands down, and there is no subscription to use Affinity. The interface looks really professional and well thought out, the help tips and help files are really useful, and there are even built in video tutorials! I have seen some negative reveiws about Affinity Photo in the App store, but I can honestly say that I have not experienced crashes and freezes at all, and I am using it on an iPad Air 2. I can't reccomend this app highly enough.

Awesome

I've paid hundreds of pounds in the past for Photoshop. This app is amazing for the price. It works extremely well on the iPad Pro. It's like having the desktop version on your tab. Still learning the interface but from what I've seen it contains all the tools you need. There are also some great Affinity tutorials online. Overall really pleased with this app.
