Bernard of Clairvaux, a 12 century French abbot was mighty influential in the writings of John Calvin, the Genevan Reformer that sparked the Reformation. It is said that Calvin owes much of his theology on justification to Bernard, who had a many similar teachings that were in concert with the Reformers.
