Met The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan (1963) start Bob Dylan praktisch eigenhandig de moderne singer-songwritertraditie. Songs als ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’, ‘A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall’ en ‘Masters of War’ tackelen venijnig doeltreffend actuele politieke thema’s, terwijl hij in ‘Girl from the North Country’ en ‘Don't Think Twice, It's All Right’ net zo makkelijk zijn liefdesleven in akoestische gitaarfolk giet. Voor die tijd verbluffend, maar ook nu nog een van de onbetwiste hoogtepunten van Dylans oeuvre.
